Guidelines for Authors, Copyright and Prizes

  • Manuscripts
Manuscripts should be typewritten and double-spaced, with 2cm margins on both sides. Authors should retain a copy for reference or in case of loss of the original.
  • Title
The title must be concise and reflect the subject matter. It should be followed by author's name and title, position at place of work, and country.
  • Text
The main text should be preceded by an abstract of approximately 100 words. Long passages of text should be avoided by the appropriate use of sub-titles.
References should be numbered in the text and listed at the conclusion in numerical order.
Special instructions to the Editor should be clearly marked to avoid any confusion with the main body of text.
  • Units & Symbols
SI units should be used wherever possible.
  • Illustrations & Tables
Illustrations are published in black and white only. Diagrams or tables must be fair or finished drawn and suitable for reproduction and reduction wherever necessary. Original photographs should be black and white and of a quality suitable for reproduction and reduction where appropriate.
A list of figure numbers and caption titles should accompany the text.
  • Translations
Original manuscripts in a language other than English can be accepted for translation under the direction of the Editor, with whom arrangements should first be discussed.
  • Reprints
Ten reprints are supplied gratis for author's use. Additional reprints may be obtained at cost, quotes for which are available from the Editor on request.
  • Copy Dates
Closing dates for receipt of papers for consideration by the Editor and the Editorial Board are the first working day of February, May and August and 15 October for respective publication in the April, July, October and January issues.
  • Copyright
In the absence of any written statement to the contrary, authors, by submitting manuscripts for publication in The Hydrographic Journal, enter into a joint copyright agreement with The Hydrographic Society.
Reproduction of material published in The Journal may be authorised by The Society without reference to the author. Similarly, the author may submit the same work to other journals for publication without reference to The Society, provided that he or she does not enter into a sole copyright agreement with any such journal. However, should The Society be approached concerning reproduction of material, the Editor of The Journal would normally attempt to contact the author for permission prior to authorising reproduction.
  • Prizes
Two prizes are available for award annually to the authors of two papers published in The Journal which, in the opinion of the Editorial Board and Council, merit awards. A prize of £200 is available to the author of the best paper, while a further prize of £200 is available for award to the author adjudged to have written the best first contribution to The Journal.

Both awards are made primarily for the originality of content and the value of the paper(s) to hydrography. Eligible papers are those published in the issues of The Journal up to and including the October edition of the year preceding that in which the award is made. Not more than one prize is awarded for any one contribution.

All contributions are eligible with the exception of those submitted by members of the Editorial Board and incumbent members of Council. In the event of a prize being awarded to two or more co-authors of a paper, it will be left to the authors themselves to divide the prize, providing both are eligible. Should one or more co-authors not be eligible, Council will decide what proportion of a prize shall be awarded to eligible parties.
