APPLICATION OF THE WATERLINE METHOD TO THE BATHYMETRY OF A DRYING MACROTIDAL BAY

Abstract
The bathymetry of An Aod Veur, a sandy bay on the north coast of Brittany, has been determined using the waterline method, i.e. by tracing the position of the waterline at various states of the tide. The likely error in the method, caused largely by the dynamic difference in water level between the waterline within the bay and the open sea outside it, has been estimated. Although the method has produced the best bathymetric chart of the bay hitherto available, it would be better to survey the bay using a technique which is not dependent on the water level, viz. Lidar.
